Entrepreneur of the Year in the district of Mettmann

Bergstation Hilden, Schreiber Stahlbau and Gottfried Bander recognized

They are innovative, they are responsible to their employees, they make an important contribution to the economy of their location. Once a year, the district of Mettmann and the UnternehmerKreis Mettmann honor the Entrepreneur of the Year. A 400-person jury composed of regional company heads and members of the local industry and economic initiatives selects bold, active and dedicated company leaders and founders. This year, three award winners in the categories Entrepreneur of the Year, Start-up of the Year and the NeanderPreis for entrepreneurial lifetime achievement were recognized. The award ceremony was held at the KUKKO tool factory Kleinbongartz & Kaiser in Hilden. Owner Michael Kleinbongartz is the chair of the Hilden industry association.

Start-up of the Year: Bergstation Hilden

Marcel Buchmann and Justin Bohn share a common passion: climbing. They have turned this passionate hobby not only into a profession, but also their own company: the Bergstation in Hilden. That took a healthy dose of willpower, persistence, fortitude and zeal. It paid off. The project was a great success – and on top of that, Justin Bohn and Marcel Buchmann received the 2018 Start-up Prize from the UnternehmerKreis Mettmann and Mettmann district. Earlier, Justin Bohn was an investment banker, and Marcel Buchmann is a trained sports and fitness administrator as well as a climbing coach. During excursions together, they learned that climbing is their passion. The dream of their own climbing wall facility soon developed. They wanted to literally "aim high", because their facility was intended to fulfill great demands and not be interchangeable with others. Of course, the road wasn't easy, for example the financing. What bank would give a million Euro loan to two young men with no security or business experience? Fortunately, they found a business development bank and an ideal location in the Bahnhofsallee in Hilden. There arose the Bergstation, with dizzying dimensions: 3100 square meters of climbing surface, 550 square meters of outside wall, a 17 meter high climbing wall, a 19 meter high outdoor climbing wall and an 800 square meter boulder area. With that, over 300 different climbing routes are possible in every difficulty level for pros and beginners. Offers such as fall training and yoga as a warm-up add to the portfolio. The Bergstation Hilden celebrated its grand opening at the beginning of 2017 – and met with enthusiasm right from the start. The German climbing championship was even held there in November. In just a few months, the Bergstation Hilden has climbed to the peak of success. And certainly isn't about to stop – there are still a lot more ideas and investments.

Entrepreneur of Year 2018: Corinna Schreiber, Schreiber Stahlbau GmbH, Hilden

In 1959, Erich Schreiber founded the steelwork company Schreiber Stahlbau GmbH. There, 50 employees produce steel-framed halls and parking structures – under the most technically complicated and demanding conditions. That is a claim not many companies can make. Today, Corinna Schreiber heads the traditional company. She is the widow of Axel Schreiber, the founder's son. He died in 2014, and Corinna Schreiber was faced with a great challenge, continuing the company as he would have wanted. With finesse, willpower and the support of the existing staff, Corinna Schreiber, who holds a Masters in Business Administration, established herself in an industry dominated by men," said the jury of the UnternehmerKreis Mettmann, giving their reasoning in awarding the Entrepreneur of the Year 2018. "Her goal is for at least one of her three daughters to receive an innovative and healthy family company, as her late husband wanted." She stood up for her staff and set new standards in steelwork. A new, modern presence and individual entrepreneur events with company tours opened the company to the outside and are just one part of the changed company culture. "I would like to thank above all my CEO Christian Rüdiger and Marketing Director Markus Hardt," she said, touched at the award ceremony. Corinna Schreiber is a member of a variety of company associations in the Mettmann district and always has a sympathetic ear for social projects in Hilden and her hometown Haan.

NeanderPreis for entrepreneurial lifetime achievement: Gottfried Bander, Contacto Bander

The award for entrepreneurial lifetime achievement goes not only the company directors who have successfully established themselves in the market over many years, but who are also socially and societally committed. Gottfried Bander (born 1941) just such a go-getter. His company Contacto Bander in Erkrath has specialized in pots since 1958 and later in high-quality stainless steel dishes for professional gastronomy. The products are marketed all over the world. Gottfried Bander began his professional career with training in the Mettmann district administration. But he quickly realized that he had other interests. At Contacto, he worked in the import/export department. In the 70s, he earned a degree as a professional of trade and commerce in Dortmund. He married the daughter of the company owner and took over the direction of the company after the death of his father-in-law in 1986. In 2006, he handed over management of the company to his son Christian, to whom he still offers advice as needed. He also made his mark in his hometown. In 1992, he took on the patronage of the men's choral society and the Hochdahl women's choir. He is the proud owner of a photo collection of inhabitants of the village of Trills, which he has exhibited publicly many times. Bander is also the founder of the Trills Street Festival. Since 2015, he has held the office of deputy chair of the Hochdahl civic association. His passion for the railroad has given Hochdahl a most remarkable cultural sites. At the end of the 90s, he purchased the historic, but rundown locomotive shed, had it restored and transformed it into an event hall for concerts, exhibits, conferences and celebrations of all kinds. In 2006, Bander was awarded the Rheinlandtaler by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (Rhineland Regional Council) for his involvement with the Railroad and Local History Museum.
